You don’t need to be perfect!
Think for just a moment about the last time you tried to be perfect.
Was it a project at work? Were you trying to
decorate a child’s
birthday cake? Were you throwing together a holiday
dinner?
Chances are, whatever you were doing, the outcome
wasn’t perfect. After
you finished, you thought of something you could’ve
done even better.
Did it nag you, causing you to worry what others
might think? Or, did
you knock yourself because it felt like you just
couldn’t measure up to
someone else?
If any of these situations sound like ones you’ve experienced, I’d
like to help.
I’m Kate Harrington, and I’ve spent 5 years giving
people just like
you the confidence they need to get past “important”
things that seem
to require “perfection.” Unfortunately that pursuit
of perfection just
leads to disappointment and damaged self-confidence
even when we
realize that being perfect is a goal we can never
reach.
How hard is it to be perfect? Well ...
-- In professional football, the last time a team
was “perfect” –
meaning it didn’t lose a game all season – was in
1972. Of course, the
players made mistakes on the field. They just didn’t
lose any games.
-- In baseball, a player who gets a hit 40 percent
of the times he
tries is considered Hall of Fame material! He’s
failing more than half
the time, yet people think he’s incredible!
-- Even our calendar isn’t perfect. We have some
months with 31 days,
some with 30, and one with 28 ... except in leap
years, when we need an
extra day to fix the misalignment from the previous
three years!
--Cable and satellite signals sometimes fail to make
it to our
televisions ... tires have blowouts ... roads have
potholes ...
students don’t always score A’s on their work. So
with all of these
imperfections – which can cost people millions of
dollars to fix – does
that birthday cake, holiday meal or project at the
office seem quite so
important?
I’m not suggesting that you should settle for being
average, or put out
an effort that’s just enough to get by. Far from it.
At the same time,
however, I want you to believe that striving for
excellence makes
everyone around you very happy ... but you don’t
need to fret about
little imperfections here and there.
